Math Club Brings Sunshine to Numbers: A High Schooler’s Story

Imagine a classroom after school where math isn’t just numbers on a page; it’s laughter, creativity, and invigorating. Welcome to our Math Club, where Sophie Wu, Ruize Sun, Ethan Pu, Joy Tang, Angela Ding and James Bennett, our local Mathcounts athletes, have turned learning into an engaging, delightful adventure.

Sophie’s journey to creating this club is like a summer story itself. While competing nationally, she stumbled upon the magic of math clubs. “I saw how much fun math could be, not just in competitions but through games and challenges,” she shares, her eyes lighting up. Inspired by the joy she experienced, Sophie decided to bring that sunshine to our school, to inspire younger kids to see math in a whole new light.

Here’s the scene: Make 24 – kids with cards in their hands, building the number 24 with basic math operations. Happiness and laughter fills the room.

Ruize adds to the vibe, “Math isn’t just homework; it’s puzzles, it’s fun.” He’s all about those monthly challenges that make your brain spark like fireworks, like figuring out how to share a pizza fairly among friends.

Then there’s Ethan and James, the dynamic duo making every math class they attend feel like a perfect day. James’s passion is for math explorations. “We made mini bridges out of straws and learned about geometry. Our student’s expressions were like a sun peeking out of a cloudy sky,” He beams.

Angela and Joy love problem sets and turn them into games to make them more enjoyable for the students. “These sets are solved, but for a game. Get it right, and they shoot a basket in Trashketball. This way, the students are having fun while learning at the same time.”

Being part of this club isn’t just about getting better at math; it’s about growing together under the environment of camaraderie and fun. Running this club has been like catching rays of understanding from different angles, just like solving those tricky math problems. In the year of 2024, this club was and is recognized as a “Silver Level Club” by the National Math Club.

So, if you ever thought math was just okay, come check out our club. We’ve got photos of us playing math games, like Salute and Trashketball, to show you how math can be fun and exciting, not just acceptable. Let’s make numbers our field, where every problem solved is like basking in the warmth of success.
